Here is our complete guide to everything you need to know about Adirondack chairs, including history, styling, and cleaning.

What are Adirondack Chairs?

History

Adirondack chairs were invented in 1903 by Thomas Lee, who originally called it the Westport Chair. The design had a reclined back and seat for comfort, with one slat of wood for the back. His friend, Harry Bunnell, patented the design in 1905. Many different designers modified the chairs’ design over the years until we got to the rounded chairs we know and love today. Irving Wolpin in 1938 patented a new version of the design using 3-6 slats of wood instead of one, evolving into the modern chairs were used to seeing. The name of the chairs was changed to Adirondack for the Adirondack Mountains where Lee created the original chair.

Our Adirondack chairs are manufactured sustainably from recycled plastic, and designed using six or seven slats of Polywood for the reclined back. The reclined back and seat make the chair comfortable. The Polywood materials make the chair extremely durable, they are built to withstand harsh weather conditions and temperatures that are common here in Pennsylvania.

Why are Adirondack Chairs Popular?

Adirondack chairs have a distinct and iconic style deeply rooted in nature and are symbolic of the American outdoors. They offer durability and functionality while elevating the aesthetics of your outdoor living space. Homeowners also love the design – The wide armrest provides a practical place to hold drinks, the ergonomic arched backrest allows for blood circulation, and the broad design offers comfort for a variety of body types.
